Hello, Reddit. I am bathrobeDFS.
I am a weird person. Not BAD weird like the kid that sits in the back of the classroom smelling his fingers; I’m weird because the thing that makes me happiest in the world is to do research, learn, and share that knowledge with other people. It’s why I was a national debate champion and, eventually, a debate coach. It’s why I went to an ivy league school for journalism, after which I became a writer and editor. And it’s probably why I grew up loving baseball so much.
I was in love.
I know it’s weird, but that’s me.
I felt the same way when I discovered fantasy baseball after I left college in 2001. I spent an inordinate amount of time doing math, reading, researching, and building team after team, trying to find an edge over whoever wanted to go against me. I stayed up until 3am to stream pitchers after they came off waivers. I stayed up late at night, laying in bed, trying to think of the funniest pun I could use as my team name (anything about Albert Pooholes). I was hooked. But it left an itch I couldn’t scratch. I needed something to do during the off-season. So in 2004 I tried my luck in fantasy football.
I will admit, the only major sports I grew up watching were baseball and hockey. I never really liked football. I rooted for the Dolphins, sure, but it wasn’t something I craved and waited for. Sunday was just any other day.
So I started fantasy football completely blind. I decided I would approach it in a calculated and mathematical way. I would spend my free time putting together sources, I would check how accurate they were, how research-based certain takes were, and built teams based on that. Much to my surprise, I won every league I was in.
I learned then an important lesson- sources matter. Finding the right people, giving you the right information, the right way, and for the right reasons, is crucial. Having knowledge is helpful, but if you know how to find the right sources, you are already steps ahead of the competition.
That’s what I have been doing for DFS. I play, and have always played, one lineup in GPPs. I almost never play cash. I almost never play more than one lineup. Even though I absolutely love it now, I didn’t know anything NBA fantasy when I started. As of right now, only entering tournaments of $25 and under, I’m up 5 figures.
I’m not saying I’m always going to be right. I’m not saying that you should trust me and me alone. I’m saying that everything i love in this life makes me perfect to be one of the sources you consider when making your own mind up. In the years I have dedicated to research and math, I have a unique edge on what works and what doesn’t. I hope to share that with you every day, and I hope we all make each other better like the wonderful community this is.
I’m going to approach every pick I make and every article I write from the perspective of someone that plays Draftkings GPPs and does so with one lineup. I am not going to tell you to “take 5%” of someone or to “double ownership.” I am going to tell you, given ONE choice, is this the someone you play or not. I’m going to try and tell you what that means. And every single day, I play on sharing the previous night’s lineup with all of you. I will break down who I played, and why I played them. I will break down what worked, what didn’t, and why. Some days will go well. Some days won’t. Sometimes I’ll be an MJ fadeaway. Sometimes I’ll be whatever the hell Markelle Fultz was doing. But I will always break down any reasoning I have, free to be discussed or criticized. I think this will be an incredibly useful tool that isn’t seen in this industry because people either play too many lineups, or are scared of showing failure.
Quite simply, I don’t.
So hello, everyone. I will be working with the new moderator to bring you unique content every day, with other articles coming in the future. I plan on doing a daily article, on top of my normal output, analyzing good chalk and bad chalk. We have other ideas, and I’d love to hear from any of you, if there is something you would be interested in seeing.
I hope you enjoy it. Let’s all get rich together.
