11/01/21 NHL Main Slate Analysis and Breakdown

High Priority

Batherson (5300), Norris (5200), Chabot (6400), Stutzle (4100), Tkachuk (6100), Brown (3900)

Surprise to many: when you have the former Vezina winner (league’s best goaltender), he can keep you in some tight games. That’s exactly what we saw out of Marc-Andre Fleury against the Blues last time out for the Blackhawks. He kept this piss poor Chicago team in a match where he saw some outstanding chances which eventually led to a Torey Krug goal in the 3rd period. I have no problem prioritizing the Senators tonight on this small slate. Despite one good game, the Blackhawks are still a target to stack against and using the top power play unit is the number one priority for me tonight featuring the all too cheap Drake Batherson and Josh Norris. Another thing to note is that the Blackhawks have let the last five top unit defensivemen score at least one point against them. This bodes well for digging down on Thomas Chabot.

McDavid (9200), Draisaitl (8200), Hyman (6300), Barrie (4800)

You would think that on a tiny slate like this one that we would get some kind of price increase for the best player in the world. Alas, we have a sub 10k McDavid that will be, at least,  60% owned tonight. If you want to test game theory here, then I don’t blame you. If he puts up a stinker tonight, you could certainly become rich. However, with all external factors considered, I don’t see how you can fade him here. If he needs 2x his salary in DK points, he should be easily over 10k. He’s had more 30+ fantasy point games than sub 20. I don’t care if you just one-off him here, just keep playing him until DraftKings wisens up.

GPP Pivots

Ovechkin (8800), McMichael (3200), Mantha (4600), Wilson (5000), Sprong (2500), Carlson (5900), *Protas (2500)

So with everyone and their mothers loading up on Edmonton tonight and most people favoring Tampa Bay in this matchup, I think we get some relatively low ownerships on a Caps team that can surely score. Ovechkin is proving that he doesn’t age, somewhat quietly putting up 15 points in his first 8 games. If you wanted to get some secondary Edmonton pieces and spend up in the Washington game, then I can absolutely get behind that. Inversely, if you want to get McDavid and access the Capitals, I love their 2nd line of McMichael, Mantha, and Sprong. They’re all pretty cheap and have high ceilings. One player to watch out for is Aliaksei Protas, a prospect that was called up today. If he gets his debut and can get at least 3rd line minutes, I can dig that as a punt.
